I don't write blogs posts overly often. And when I do I try to make them meaningful!

These are thoughts I am inspired to share from my observations about Life, Leadership, Personal Branding, the Expat Experience and everything in-between. Please feel free to share your comments - your feedback is important to me!

Master the Task Master

Each of us habours an inner Taskmaster who drives us in a quest for perfection, to be always on the ball; to act as if we have it all together, while at the same time, providing us with regular and demanding challenges.  We might call this part of the human condition.  If we observe very mindfully, we’ll notice that our Taskmaster seems to show up most often with these laborious demands in one particular arena of our lives.  Perhaps we’re tasked to work harder than most in our  money matters or we need to work harder than most on our relationships on in our careers.  We might highlight that arena as our area of weakness and work even harder to overcome what might feel like restrictions that never let us entirely relax and feel that we have arrived. Too much evidence Points to the Positive

All strengths can be overdone and it’s no a surprise to hear that on one of my client’s properties, people are starting to get irked by overdone positive messages.  Of course, a dose of reality is important to temper the message but, before you throw out all your coaches and motivational influencers, take a look at the early research that propositions the notion that when you think and feel positively, positive things happen; […]

Is Spirituality in the Boardroom an Oxymoron or Achievable?

When I was a little girl I was taught the societal fundamentals of dinner-table etiquette; to avoid dinner table arguments, never discuss politics or religion at the dinner table.  Now that I’m a big girl, I’ve decided to rebel that rule—I love to talk politics and religion right at the dinner table.  I’ve learned that what is important is how you discuss them.  Is it just me, or does it seem that society’s thinking has followed my evolution from little to big? […]

Feedback and Impressions for the 9th Annual Coaching and Mentoring Conference

Pre-eminent local and international thinkers in the field of leadership, change and development recently gathered in Johannesburg for the 9th Annual Knowledge Resources Coaching and Mentoring Conference.  The idea, as always, was to share best practice, case studies, ethical issues, integral practices and cutting-edge thinking in the mushrooming professions of coaching and mentoring.  I use the word ’professions’ but I far prefer the term offered by keynote speaker Sunny Stout Rostron; the “Craft” of coaching—combining science and art in the pursuit of conscious mastery.’ […]

Executive De-Railers and the case for Coaching

“What do you see as the value that he/she brings to this organization?”, “What do you see as his/her major de-railers?”, “What do you feel is missing from his/her leadership repertoire?”.  These three questions form the base of short telephonic interviews that I conduct with my client’s key stake-holders at the beginning of my typical executive coaching interventions.  […]

Constant Careerists – Take Heart!

In 2001, the same year of his passing, Thorsons publishers published Heart Surgeon Professor Chris  Barnard’s book 50 Ways to a Healthy Heart.  In this definitive guide, Barnard highlights the obvious lifestyle habits that support a healthy heart—don’t smoke or eat too much fat or fry your food.  Do take your vitamins and minerals and eat plenty of fresh fruit and veggies.  Manage your stress levels, sleep beautifully and spend time in sunlight.  Add exercise and adopt a positive attitude.  Interestingly to me, and importantly to many of us, he warns that people whom he calls ‘constant careerists’ should take special heed to protect against heart disease. Are you BE-ing a lion or a fox?

A Zen teaching story tells of a man who prayed continually for awareness to succeed in life.   Then one night he dreamed of going into the forest to attain understanding.  The next morning he went into the woods and wandered for several hours looking for some sign that would provide answers.  When he finally stopped to rest, he saw a fox with no legs lying between two rocks in a cool place.  Curious as to know how a legless fox could survive, he waited until sunset when he observed a lion come and lay meat before the fox.  ‘Ah, I understand’, the man thought.  ‘The secret to success is to trust that God will take care of all my needs.  I don’t need to provide for myself.  All I have to do is totally surrender to the all-sustaining universe.’  Two weeks later, weakened and starving, the man had another dream.  In it he heard a voice say, ‘Fool.  Be like the lion, not the fox’.  […]

What are the most important elements of making a good first impression?

With 14 000 unique users, the mentorship programme on Ndalo Media’s website, www.destinyconnect.com, is proving a valuable partnership as a source of inspiration to ambitious African executives and professionals focused on accomplishing their prospective career goals. From Feb 7th to June 5th 2010, I’m on the on-line mentor on this site, representing the theme “How to make a great first impression”. Here are my initial responses to the questions put to me by the DestinyConnect  team; do they leave you with a great impression? What are the most important elements of making a good first impression? Here’s the all-inclusive phrase – be charismatic – it’s that personal quality that gives you influence, power and authority (in good ways). Charisma does not relate to your body design – you can be short, tall, thin or fat – nor to your jewellery, or car or position in life.  Charisma isn’t tangible, it’s a spiritual notion – it’s about allowing others to meet your spirit – the most powerful part of your personality. Charisma is developed through personal awareness and spiritual intent and, as the saying goes, if you haven’t got it yet, it’s OK to fake it until you make it!  Consider these five important steps toward developing the qualities of charismatic people: […]

Coincidences and Cosmic Jolts

When was the last time you experienced something seemingly out of the ordinary?  Perhaps this morning you were thinking about someone and ring, ring, they called.  Or, you were looking for a signal or sign, a piece of information,  when a newsletter slipped into your inbox and offered it to you. Did you consider why this coincidence might have happened? […]

Awareness of the Reality of the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

If you haven’t yet got yourself a copy of Achieving our Full Potential (New Voices Publishing ISBN-13:978-1-920094-69-0), I suggest you rush out and get it.  Written by South African psychologist and executive coach, Dr Richard Oxtoby , it offers easy to understand and no-nonsense psychology concepts to adopt in a personal change program.  One of the chapters I really enjoy is called Awareness of the reality of the self-fulfilling prophecy where Dr Oxtoby sheds some credibility on this sometimes out-there concept.   […]

Just because it’s January, should we ALL be setting goals?

Just because it’s January, should we all be setting goals?  Have you ever had the intuitive niggle that although it’s January and everyone is shouting goals, goals, goals, you’re simply not ready to set yours yet?  Perhaps you feel like you’re still getting a handle on previously set goals or that you’re just not inspired for goal-setting at this time?  And it’s frustrating because we all know that the annual year runs from January to December and the financial year runs more or less the same, and your HR Department wants your annual objectives pronto.  So what’s up for you? […]
